An interview with Louisa Casson - Greenpeace oceans campaigner

"We can see that governments around the world are waking up to the problem"

I recently caught up with oceans campaigner, Louisa Casson (Greenpeace) to talk about the current state of marine plastic pollution, from the problems on marine and human life, to the solutions that she has seen around the world. Louisa speaks about corporate responsibility of big corporations like coke who are "pumping out over 110 billion plastic bottles every single year" to restaurants and cafes putting stickers in their windows to stop people feeling embarrassed about asking for tap water! Her optimism about the future gives hope and the rest of this blog will look into the problem's solutions.

  1. Great interview! I really agree that responsibility has to come back to the companies that are creating the pollution, however, I think Governments such as the UK's need to step up - we shouldn't have to rely on Greenpeace and co.

An initiative that I like and try to follow is the Take 3 initiative - started by some Australian surfers/Enviros - "Take 3 pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach, waterway or…anywhere and you’ve made a difference" Although it's a very much reactive approach, it makes you feel like you're playing a part. http://www.take3.org/about/

    1. Yeah it seems like our government is definitely lagging behind. Scotland should be introducing their bottle return scheme next year which'll hopefully show the rest of the UK what a good idea it is.

I've never heard of that Take 3 initiative, seems like a logical idea!
