Following on from last post, it was announced last week that Michael Gove is pushing the Department for International Development (Dfid) to use more of the £13billion in foreign aid money on tackling marine plastics. As mentioned in a previous post the majority of ocean plastic comes from Asia, with a recent study by Schmidt et al. (2017) identifying 88-95% of plastic entering the ocean from land, comes from just 10 major rivers (8 in Asia and 2 in Africa). With this huge majority of marine plastic originating from these countries, we must look to them to see what is being done to stop the problem.
Cibhi Selven from India has decided to help tackle the issue by starting his own company 'Regeno'. The company uses vegetable starch to create utensils, straws (!), tableware, packaging and carrier bags (above) so all are biodegradable, with the carrier bag being safe for consumption by animals and biodegrading in water in 3-4 months. See the video below of this in action.
Check out the Regeno website for more information.
